Gender Diversity Workshop Series

Gender Diversity Workshop Series

BMCC is grateful for funding from the Equal Opportunities (Sexual Orientation) Funding Scheme to host four batches of gender-education workshops this year — each lasting three sessions, primarily conducted in Cantonese. The first round was held in July and August.

Unlike past activities organised mainly through interview or sharing formats, this workshop series will centre on interactive activities, role-play, and forum theatre.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Jason Ho, a graduate of the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong. With over seventeen years of teaching experience, Dr. Ho has long been concerned with social justice issues. In addition to extensive experience in English studies and pedagogy, he has done in-depth research in cultural diversity and gender education — including sexuality education. His research paper “Engaging sexual identities in tertiary English classrooms: a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to designing a critical sexual literacy curriculum” advocates for using multimodal texts and pedagogical modes to develop participants’ critical thinking on LGBTQ+ issues and cultivate empathy.

The workshop will cover topics including the challenges posed by social ideologies to sexual minorities. Through discussion of cases of gender discrimination and various activity formats, participants will deepen their understanding of local and international contexts. Regardless of our own gender identity or expression, we all need to learn about gender diversity, to communicate with different people, and to deepen mutual understanding. We trust the workshop will strengthen participants’ self-identity and deepen their understanding of diversity, equality, and civil society.

Additional workshops will be held in October and November.
