Worship in the Dark

Title: Worship in the Dark
Scripture: Matthew 26:26-30
“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and offered it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’ When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” (Matthew 26:26-30, RCUV)
Lowness in Life — We All Know It
The atmosphere of darkness wraps around our bodies — from head to toe, from inside to outside. Even God can seem distant in those hours.
Yet here is what happens in this scripture: after the Last Supper, with the cross hours away, Jesus and the disciples sing a hymn — and then go out. The Bible does not say what hymn, does not say why. Time will not return; what we can do is now.
When darkness falls on us — to sing, to hum, to run, to dance, to shout out (in whatever way) a song / a play / a dance — it is a way of liberating ourselves; it is also a way of offering our most truthful selves to the Lord.
Worship in the dark — that’s what it means to me.
What about you?
Walk toward the cross — strip off fear.
Embrace the cross — sing praises in the spirit.
