Wooven Publicly Supports BMCC in Providing Mental Health Services for LGBTQ+ People
April 4, 2018, Hong Kong — Wooven, a direct-to-consumer retailer of premium bedding products, also carries a meaningful social mission. Wooven is the first Hong Kong company committed specifically to supporting LGBTQ+ mental health services. Half of the company’s profits go toward social-justice causes.
Wooven is pledging support for BMCC’s training of counsellors in affirmative therapy, so that those who need it have access to effective, evidence-based counselling. BMCC works to provide counsellors and space for professional support, and to create a place where LGBTQ+ people can safely express themselves.
Wooven founder Alan Hau says: “Most of the existing counselling services in Hong Kong only provide conversion therapy. Conversion therapy and similar approaches have been shown to cause serious psychological harm and have been banned in many countries. As someone who has gone through affirmative therapy myself, I see how urgently Hong Kong needs safe and effective counselling services right now.”
Key statistics:
• Over 30% of LGBTI+ individuals have attempted suicide; the suicide rate in this group is twice that of the general population.
• Abstinence-based therapies are not only ineffective but can cause severe psychological trauma.
• In Hong Kong, organisations and counsellors capable of effectively providing affirmative therapy remain very few.
